A Taste of Home, From Cameroon

Remember the days when the guests came over and, you used to sit together with everyone in the living room, or when the entire family had a reason to celebrate, and you being “YOU”, waited patiently for your parents or grandparents to open the box of sweets that was brought for this special occasion, just because you wanted to delve into those tasteful delights. Just like that some snacks or treats became a part of your core memory. They now remind you of all the celebrations and festivals you used to celebrate with your loved ones. For Indians, one snack that holds a special place in their hearts and is prominently enjoyed and distributed during festivities like Diwali, Holi or Ganesh Chaturthi or enjoyed with a warm cup of tea during a family get-together is the “Shakar Para.”

Staying away from home? How about some Chin Chin?

When you are living alone in a different country, every day reminds you of those tiny precious moments of laughter and happiness that you used to celebrate with the people close to you. Finding something in a foreign land that reminds you of home and resonates with your memory is even harder.

However, sometimes you might come across a snack or food that you are not familiar with, but it still feels like “Home”, it might be because it has a similar texture or a similar taste, or maybe it just feels nostalgic to you, reminding you of the good old days. One such token of joy that you might find familiar to your beloved Indian snack Shakar Para is the snack called “Chin Chin,” which is local to West Africa. Bringing a bit of Cameroon to Canada

Food is an experience, it is the bridge that not only connects us, but brings us all together despite our backgrounds, so when Gaelle Fodjo, formed All African Delights which offers Chin Chin, she wanted Africans living in Canada to be reminded of the, but as years went by, she realized that her mother’s Chin Chin recipe surpassed borders and reminded people from diverse ethnic background of snacks they used to eat back in their home country.
