Traditional African Chin-Chin in Canada for Everyone
Food can trigger fond memories, transport us back to known places, and create a sense of comfort. For immigrants, food plays a significant role in keeping them tied to their homeland and preserving cultural identity. Canada receives immigrants every year from all over the world, augmenting its culinary landscape and diverse population. Taking all of these factors into consideration, All African Delights brings you the traditional African Chin-Chin in Canada, which celebrates African flavours and also gives a home-like feeling to not just the African community but to everyone.
Chin-Chin at All African Delights is made with simple yet delightful combination of eggs, wheat flour, butter, whole milk, baking powder, vanilla extract, sea salt and sugar. This fried dough has a crunchy texture and is minimal in sugar which makes it irresistible.
The Journey of Chin-Chin from Cameroon to Canada
The Story of All African Delights and Chin-Chin
Cameroon, a country in Central Africa is the inspiration and the root of our African Chin-Chin. We witnessed a huge gap in the quality of African food offered in Canada, which motivated us to introduce All African Delights, an African food store which offers the beloved African snack Chin-Chin, while maintaining its authenticity and taste. We aim to bring the rich flavours and cultural heritage of Cameroon to Canada, providing a true taste of home to the immigrants from diverse cultural backgrounds.
Relatability of Chin-Chin Across Diverse Cultures
Another reason why Chin-Chin makes you feel nostalgic is its similarity with variety of snacks consumed by different cultures around the world. Here’s a list of snacks that share the common taste and texture as the African Chin-Chin.
- KulKul from Goa, India is made from bits of a sweet dough shaped into small curls. This delicacy of Goa is enjoyed by the Mangaloreans in the region during the time of Christmas.
- Shakarpara is a Indian snack made by combining simple ingredients like all-purpose flour and sugar. Indians make shakarpara during the festival of Holi and Diwali.
- Khapse is a deep fried Tibetan pastry prepared with similar ingredients as Chin-Chin. Khapse is offered in Tibet during Losar (Tibetan New Year) and special occasions like weddings.
- Pasta Fritta is a sweet fried pastry dough from Italy. It is called as Gnocco Fritto.
- Uraro is prepared using basic ingredients like arrowroot flour (similar to corn flour), butter, and eggs. Uraro is a melt-in-your-mouth treat and an ideal midday snack.
- Mandazi’s are soft, triangle shape donuts from Kenya (East Africa). They contain cardamom and pair perfectly with a cup of tea or coffee.
- Oliebollen are deep fried Dutch pastries typically filled with raisins and dusted with powdered sugar
